DSS offers and Kids summer activities

With temperatures soaring, I’m running out of ideas to keep my little one occupied but have you seen the Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) calendar on for this month? This is sure to keep us very busy! DSS is an initiative that makes the city more exciting for residents and visitors in the summertime.

If that’s not enough, the soft play areas in Dubai will keep the littles occupied for hours! Have a look at some of my favourites:

Fun City: Fun City launches a unique membership of 100 days of unlimited play for only 99 AED!

City Walk transforms into an underwater paradise

Every Friday and Saturday at City Walk, journey deep beneath the waves for a fluid spectacular of acrobatics and contemporary dance. Under the Sea combines gorgeous costuming, LED lighting and scenery that create an immersive and interactive atmosphere, bringing the atmosphere of City Walk to life. Meet entrancing characters from the show along the way, and explore exciting scenes like Mermaid’s Hideout and the Pirate’s Cove. Finish the journey with a treasure hunt, workshops, live magic shows and prizes for the kids. Entry is free with a minimum spend of AED200 at any City Walk outlet.

Modesh World: Indoor entertainment for families

Get ready to paint summer yellow and blue. Modhesh is bringing back his pop-up land of games and rides this summer. The family-centric event takes place exclusively during Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS). This annual event sprawls across six cool, air-conditioned huge halls in Dubai World Trade Centre, crammed with colourful characters, lively children’s entertainers and shows for the whole family.
Every family member gets to enjoy Modhesh World with new experiences introduced every year. Parents can even leave their little ones in the care of experienced baby-minders while they take the bigger kids exploring..

Bricks pop-up in BoxPark

There’s no better way for children to enjoy the summer than to get involved with Lego’s ever-popular bricks pop-up in BoxPark. Taking place for the third consecutive year at DSS and in partnership with Legoland Dubai, the event features interactive games, promotions and Lego building workshops. Time your visit to coincide with frequent treasure hunts, where little participants can win instant prizes for every brick they pull out from a wall of Lego cabinets.

Imagine – Unveiling a breathtaking sensory experience of a life-time

A new story has made a permanent mark on the world’s largest water screen projection, Imagine, at Dubai Festival City Mall. The story about a little boy who dreams big took center stage at the Festival Bay Area. Delivered through a breathtaking sensory experience, the show is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Take time to head to the mall with the family and have the time of your life as the adventure unravels amidst surround sound, the world-class laser technology using fire, water and light.

Looney Toons live show for little ones
Fan of the Looney Tunes? Then it’s time to meet Road Runner during DSS at Dragon Mart 2. Plus there’s special arts and crafts workshops before and after the performances, so make sure you catch one of the three daily shows. Be quick though, the Road Runner is one speedy bird. Beep, beep!

Captain America, Iron Man and Thor come to life this DSS
Superhero fans, listen up! A host of your favourite characters from Marvel, Cartoon Network and Lost Valley have landed in Dubai for the summer. Find them at exclusive meet and greet events at select malls every Thursday to Saturday from 6-9pm during DSS 2017. Organised by IMG Worlds of Adventure – the world’s largest indoor themed entertainment destination – the sessions occur every 30 minutes, giving you the chance to pose with Captain America, Thor, Spiderman, Iron Man, Cartoon Network: Ben 10 and the dinosaurs from Lost Valley.

Sport goes indoors for summer
Dubai Sports World turns summer into the season of fitness. This year’s seventh edition of the UAE’s largest indoor summer sports venue is organised in partnership with Dubai Sports Council, and will open for three action-packed months for athletes of all levels to conduct their training.
Facilities available at this year’s edition include: four pro-standard pitches for five-a-side football, four pro-standard pitches for seven-a-side football and rugby, six basketball courts, three tennis courts, twelve badminton courts, a mini cricket pitch, a regulation-sized volleyball court, a state-of-the-art gym by Technogym, a dedicated fitness studio for group classes, a cycling studio, a running track and a free-to-enter Table Tennis Zone.
There is also a skate park, a trampoline park, padel facilities and a sports camp for children. Several coaching clinics will also be available onsite to guide participants in cricket, wrestling, tennis, and football. Sheikh Saeed Halls and Trade Centre Arena, DWTC

Learn circus skills during DSS 2017
Kids can run away to the circus with this free, interactive workshop. Activities include: face painting, meet and greets with the artists, juggling and acrobatic training. This fun, free entertainment is part of Dubai Summer Surprises 2017 from 1 July – 12 August (except Sunday) at 5:30pm. Mercato Mall
Also at Mercato Mall Be entertained while you shop by a host of roaming acts that will tour through the mall, including special unicycles, an art show, funny car and bicycle clowns, plus brilliant comedy acts. This is part of the celebrations at Mercato this DSS.

Prizes, entertainment and fun galore at The Outlet Village
The Outlet Village invites shoppers to enjoy a unique summer like no other, with an indoor activation evoking a getaway to Tuscany. With fresh flowers, an Italian artisan market, beautiful garden spaces, engaging workshops, musical entertainment and children’s arts and craft classes, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy. Shopaholics, too, will be thrilled with incredible special offers on iconic premium and luxury brands, and can take part in the exciting Spend & Win campaign for a chance to win a grand prize.

Hangry Hangar
A street food festival with a difference

A favourite event among Dubai residents, Hangry Hangar combines the best street foods of the world under one cavernous roof. Taking place in a quirky converted warehouse space in the city’s buzzing Al Quoz district, the food festival features eight unique food concepts serving mouthwatering bites for the whole family to enjoy. Stay cool with a summer carnival featuring heart-pounding rides, exciting attractions and marvellous entertainment. Head to Dubai’s first indoor theme park, IMG Worlds of Adventure to catch all the action. Kids will love the parades, mesmerizing live performances and games such as Dino Egg Hunt. And while they’re having fun, get an adrenaline rush at several adventure zones from Marvel to Lost Valley and Cartoon Network. Otherwise, chill out at several restaurants offering an immersive dining experience. Don’t forget to stop by the retail outlets and pick up a few souvenirs to cherish the memory of your trip to IMG Worlds Summer Carnival.

Learn the ancient Chinese art
Who said you couldn’t learn anything at a shopping mall? Discover the Chinese martial art of Kung Fu during DSS in one of the three daily classes held at Dragon Mart 2. Available six days a week from 4:30pm onwards from 1 July-12 August.

Every week is a new parade during DSS (until 26 August)
Over eight separate weekends, there’ll be special parades throughout Dragon Mart 2 during DSS. The themes of these magical roaming performances include: Fantasy, Alice in Wonderland, Under the Sea and Musical Colour. Which spectacular show will you and the kids enjoy as a family? Shows run for 20 minutes every Thursday, Friday and Saturday on selected dates throughout July and August. Make sure you catch one.

Food truck lovers, start your engines
The newest foodie hangout this season, Truckers Summer Warehouse is an indoor festival featuring 14 homegrown food trucks offering fusion cuisines and authentic street food from all around the world. Held in partnership between food truck movement Truckers DXB and the Dubai World Trade Centre, the event welcomes families of all ages to enjoy live performances by talented local artists and participate in interactive entertainment – from an arts and craft market, carnival games, mechanical bull ride, jugglers, hula-hoop, face painting, to kids’ cooking stations and much more

Be impressed by BMX stunts and balancing acts
See an extraordinary show with BMX bike stunts, acrobatics, impressive rope skipping and breath-taking balancing skills. All this family-friendly entertainment is part of Dubai Summer Surprises 2017 from 17 July – 12 August (except Sunday) at 4:15pm, 7:30pm and 9:15pm.

Gravity-defying tricks at Mercato mall
Watch Tobias, an incredibly talented Italian artist who is fascinated by the idea of ‘equilibrium’, challenge gravity by performing astonishing and unexpected balancing tricks. This thrilling, free entertainment is part of Dubai Summer Surprises 2017 from 18 July – 12 August (except Monday) at 5:00pm, 6:30pm and 8pm

Meet Tweety, Sylvester and Granny – Ibn Battuta Mall
Tweety, the much-loved yellow canary cartoon character, and his nemesis, Sylvester the cat, team up with Little Red Riding Hood’s grandmother to bring you a show that will keep the whole family entertained. Watch the stage come alive as the characters enact some of the thrilling scenes from the fairytale, including Tweety being chased around by hungry Sylvester before he meets Granny. The shows take place three times a day throughout the festival and are free to attend. There are also arts and craft activities for kids.

Join the community at this indoor market
Every Saturday, Dubai’s original artisan market takes place indoors at Times Square Center, allowing shoppers to enjoy the community market feel all summer long. Each week you will find a selection of local businesses selling everything from organic skincare to handmade jewelry, unique fashion & baby clothes. Plus, find all your organic grocery needs at Ripe Organic, where farm-fresh produce is the order of the day.
